Tom Alter, the American-born Indian actor who whose success in TV, theatre and cinema earned him the Padma Shri award, has died, the Times of India reported on Saturday. He was 67.
Alter had been fighting stage four skin cancer, TOI’s report said.
Known for starring in television shows like Bharat Ek Khoj, Zabaan Sambhalke and Betaal Pachisi, Tom Alter also had a flourishing career on stage.
He has played pivotal roles in successful films like Gandhi, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Kranti, Aashiqui and Parinda.
Alter was last seen on the big screen in this year’s Sargoshiyan.
A statement from Alter’s family published by TOI read: “It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father. Tom passed away Friday night at home with his family and close family members in attendance. We ask for their privacy to be respected at this time.”
