More than 20 school children are feared dead after a private bus skidded off the road and rolled down deep into a gorge in Nurpur area of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh on Monday.
Eyewitnesses said the driver, who was among the dead, lost control on a sharp curve and fell into the 200-feet deep gorge at Cheli village.
The victims belonged to Wazir Ram Singh Memorial school. The ill-fated bus was on its way to drop children back to their homes. Driver of the bus Madan lal also died in the accident.
Kangra’s superintendent of Police Santosh Patial said the rescue operation was underway. “It’s a heavy casualty” he said.
Unconfirmed reports said nine children died on the spot while other succumbed to their injuries at Nurpur government hospital. There were total 40 school children in the bus, reports said
Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur said that the food and civil supplies minister had been sent to the spot. According to eyewitness, all the children travelling in the bus were in the age group of 5 -11 years, mostly studying in primary school and kindergarten.
