Chhattisgarh Activist Bela Bhatia Attacked, Asked to Vacate Bastar House

Chhattisgarh civil rights activist Bela Bhatia was attacked today by nearly two dozen men and allegedly asked to vacate her house in Bastar.

Bhatia, an independent researcher and activist, has been working among the tribals of Bastar for many years.

Last year too, she was asked to leave Chhattisgarh soon after members of the Legal Aid group were labelled “Maoists or Maoist sympathisers”, and hounded off the state.

A defiant Bela had then written a letter to announce that she would not leave Bastar “under any circumstances”.

Many activists and journalists working in Chhattisgarh have faced threats for their work among the tribals.
